This week planning to start designing a kurta with fabric colors. I can say this as start of work , not WIP :). Have not decided the colors. Crochet is the craft which I learnt in the beginning of my journey in the world of arts and crafts. My mother taught crochet. I still have some doilies made by her 60 years ago. I love the crochet. I had made many doilies, but now I don't have those with me :(.<br />
<br />
Crochet sweaters are the best gifts to babies. I had shared about the baby sweater I had made in the post : <a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2012/03/baby-sweater-crochet.html" target="_blank">Baby sweater- Crochet.</a><br />
Here is the one I made :<br />

Most of us, are familiar with Kerala Mural Art. It is originated in Kerala. These paintings represent the rich and colorful heritage of Kerala. Earlier these were made on walls of temples, depicting many mythological stories. The colorful paintings now has taken a special place in design world. It is becoming popular in dress designing, jewels designing , interior designing etc.<br />
<br />
I have already shared about the <a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2016/11/work-in-progress-on-wednesday-kerala.html" target="_blank">Kerala Mural paintings made on Bamboo</a>.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kerala Mural on Bamboo</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
In Kerala mural paintings, the bright colors and the right combination of the colors make you awestruck. The right combination of colors, paired with fine lines with black paint and white background, beautiful and big eyes of the figures and the special technique used for ornamentation of the figures are specialties of Kerala Mural painting.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Recently I tried it on canvas too. Here is the outcome:</div>

It took many days to complete the painting. But really enjoyed while painting this.</div>

<div>
I always suggest learners of arts and crafts to get trained under experts or professional trainers. Still will post about a tutorial on Kerala Mural painting soon. Hope that will give you some knowledge about the techniques of making Kerala Mural.</div>

About my <a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2017/01/visit-to-chitrasanthe-2017.html" target="_blank">visit to Chitrasante-2017</a> I have written in my previous posts.I have shared the glimpses of Chitrasante 2017 and Bhuddha paintings exhibited there. In this post sharing some unique paintings which were exhibited there. There were loads of paintings, each one was unique. I can share very few from those.<div>
<br /><div>
The below ones are the paintings of <a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2014/12/ghats-of-varanasi-bank-of-ganges.html" target="_blank">ghats of Kaashi</a>. When I had visited Kaashi, I had seen many artists were painting sitting in a boat. This artist must also have painted in the same way. Such paintings require a lot of concentration.<br /><div>

Most of the craft lovers know about sospeso art, this is also known as 3D decaupage. Already I have done many <a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/search/label/Decoupage" target="_blank">decoupaged articles.</a> Trying sospeso on a pot. The pot is ready with basic decoupage.<br />

I was aware of Rajasthan miniature paintings and Mysore miniature painting. Recently in an exhibition I came to know about another finest art of Karnataka - Surpur miniature paintings. I met an artist, who is practising painting forms , influenced by Surpur miniature.<br />
<div>
No doubt, Surpur miniature is one of the finest art contribution from Karnataka, but it is disappearing. The artists who have learnt Surpur miniature art are shifting to other forms.Government arts academy are not supporting enough to keep the art form alive.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here are some paintings which are influenced by Surpur miniature paintings. I could not collect enough information from the artist, as he was busy in attending the customers. </div>

Surpur miniature art was practised in Yadgir district of Karnataka.The artists have migrated from Andhra Pradesh. It flourished during the period of ruler Raja Venkatappa Naik. I don't have any pictures of original Surpur miniature painting :( . It is really sad that nothing is made to support this art form.</div>

This week sharing about, cross stitch work, which I have started long back. This has taken too much of time. My sister is also helping me to complete this project. My mother has made same design and she gifted it to her friend. About her work I had shared in one of my posts-<i><a href="https://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2011/12/inheritance.html" target="_blank"> Inheritance</a></i> . <div>
Here is the work we started:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

We have completed working on the main design, the two horses. Now we need to fill it with maroon threads.It won't be completed so soon, cross stitch is always time consuming and this one is nearly 1meter X 1 meter cloth.<br />

Jammu and Kashmir, which is known for its natural beauty, is also known for many handicrafts. Who doesn't know about Kashmiri embroidery? Most of us wish to own a Kasmiri carpet. If we observe all the handicrafts of Kashmir, they are done , using very delicate designs. Another such handicraft of India, is Papier Mache work.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I could collect some pictures of papier mache work , when I visited a handicrafts exhibition.The manufacturer explained about how they make different products using papier mache. </div>

<h3 style="text-align: left;">
<br />The process of making Papier Mache:</h3>
<div>
Normally they use fine sheets of wood, from a kind of pine tree. And some use old papers too. These are made into pulp, by soaking in water and some chemicals for 4-5 days and grinding it. The pulp is molded into different shapes. And painted with natural colors . Earlier days, the golden color was made with real gold powder. Now they use acrylic and natural colors.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here are two kinds of paintings. One with single color and another with different colors. The paintings which made with different color is very difficult to make and looks beautiful too.</div>

This week was little hectic. Could not write any posts. Could not complete whatever projects I have started. Last week had shared about <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2016/11/work-in-progress-on-wednesday-kutchwork.html" target="_blank">kutch work design , which I started, last week</a> , </span>is not completed. Many are giving suggestion to use cotton thread on that. So I have decided to follow same.<br />
<br />
Here is the sneak peek of this week's project- designing a saree, with Kalamkari border.<br />

<br />
Planning to complete this by next week, and share with you.<br />

My work in progress series is stepping to third week. I started this with the post of <a href="https://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2016/11/work-in-progress-on-wednesday-dress.html" style="font-size: x-large;" target="_blank">Dress design</a> .<br />
This week sharing about the Kutchwork on a Kurta. I have shared How to trace design on stitched Kurta in <a href="https://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2016/11/how-to-transfer-design-on-stitched.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: large;">my previous post</span></a>. On the same Kurta I am starting to embroider Kutch work design.<br />
Here is the Kurta with design traced on it:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL5l8el4LBALNgS8isoiz_FVzBVpH7C32-OUH_siVyQBjm1HRrPfIyqAHCgAkww_ZB-thqvHS50vM6zOP_iSOdHkgcHC3egZbb6o6X68PsPI62ZEi5-i5xBjmpStzN5VPiEJhXTm0VWPuT/s1600/Kutch-embroidery1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Kutch on Kurta" border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL5l8el4LBALNgS8isoiz_FVzBVpH7C32-OUH_siVyQBjm1HRrPfIyqAHCgAkww_ZB-thqvHS50vM6zOP_iSOdHkgcHC3egZbb6o6X68PsPI62ZEi5-i5xBjmpStzN5VPiEJhXTm0VWPuT/s640/Kutch-embroidery1.jpg" title="Kutch on Kurta" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The design traced</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
There are some mistakes, I can correct those as it is a geometrical design. The Kurta is in wine color, choosing between pink and light purple for the embroidery. Normally Kutch work looks good with bright color, hope this color look good because of the combination.<br />

I have already learnt painting Kerala Mural on canvas, about which I will share in future. Now learning to paint it on Bamboo.<br />

This is the query I often get from most my readers. For embroidery projects, transferring the design on fabric is the tedious task. One method is to use charcoal powder. Another is using white carbon paper. Though this method is easy, but for large designs,even this is time consuming.<br />
<br />
Whatever the technique we use, transferring design on stitched garment is quite difficult , especially around neck area.<br />
<br />
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
How to transfer the design:</h4>
<div>
My suggestion for embroidery on stitched fabric, avoid large or complex designs.</div>
<div>
This is the stitched salwar top I selected for embroidery:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghfMn9kGsc1GPdXb1x57Gigu7_6GrX_RWkJkbkZuEn78zk0DsNudyYhm1M3rhr3YK5FDh7z7Py9v2QOwrTbR0_IRSg3TRkOWU4yDtoRfHPfQ8TOg-vj4d4yZE-ECzGXDD9B7H2r4UAU93F/s1600/dress1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="How to transfer design" border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghfMn9kGsc1GPdXb1x57Gigu7_6GrX_RWkJkbkZuEn78zk0DsNudyYhm1M3rhr3YK5FDh7z7Py9v2QOwrTbR0_IRSg3TRkOWU4yDtoRfHPfQ8TOg-vj4d4yZE-ECzGXDD9B7H2r4UAU93F/s640/dress1.jpg" title="How to transfer design" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The stitched dress I chose</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
I chose , simple Kutchwork design . I have these two designs in Kutchwark. Kutchwork designs are geometrical, something goes wrong with the design, that can be corrected. Both the designs I have are similar , I chose the first one:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdRIdg7QRJF6GEv_PhVeqNBU2_dkHJ2PdWQxPt4YTDL1Wi9l7st4HhobkX8w0u2wCrT1KgE2SeRNoYHA0GIAWBctGjLZfnj3jKHq3BzITRW-Th3h_kzj54sfg3NsOuHIRF8IP0S_TwGmmj/s1600/design1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="How to transfer design" border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdRIdg7QRJF6GEv_PhVeqNBU2_dkHJ2PdWQxPt4YTDL1Wi9l7st4HhobkX8w0u2wCrT1KgE2SeRNoYHA0GIAWBctGjLZfnj3jKHq3BzITRW-Th3h_kzj54sfg3NsOuHIRF8IP0S_TwGmmj/s640/design1.jpg" title="How to transfer design" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kutch design sheet</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Place a book below the fabric where the design to be transferred.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9GmWcMOSnBk5dbU79ztZZxdDiTenI2dg1vobSbiIHkfeuz6-AFPx-Ne57cT-fEu9J9w9I5OnExEhhk1_j4xwavQkV7bvr3WA2qBVM0cwrpDo3wGlO5gbcDUCKm1M7flr7iozw5oLKl9zp/s1600/dress3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="How to transfer design" border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9GmWcMOSnBk5dbU79ztZZxdDiTenI2dg1vobSbiIHkfeuz6-AFPx-Ne57cT-fEu9J9w9I5OnExEhhk1_j4xwavQkV7bvr3WA2qBVM0cwrpDo3wGlO5gbcDUCKm1M7flr7iozw5oLKl9zp/s640/dress3.jpg" title="How to transfer design" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Keep a book for support</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Now , place the carbon and the design , trace with a pencil or pen. Here is the design transferred on the fabric. There are some mistakes, which I can correct.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kutchwork design transferred</td></tr>
</tbody></table>

Starting a new series on my blog. As the title says, I will be sharing about the arts and crafts projects, on which I'm working on. It can be anything , sewing, embroidery , crochet, tatting, or paper-craft etc.<br />
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
Why I started this series (WIP) ?</h3>
<div>
There are two reasons , why I started this series. I can get some suggestions about the work from my readers, like about color combination, technique etc. Second is, I can post the completed work as soon as possible :)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Today , starting this series with a dress design. I had bought a hand-block printed Madhubani cloth from an exhibition. Madhubani is an ancient art , about which I have <a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2013/09/madhubani-art-mithila-art-art-from.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: large;">written in one of my posts</span></a>. Also I have tried painting <a href="https://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2016/07/madhubani-painting-on-wooden-box.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: large;">it on a wooden box</span></a>. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Madhubani paintings are also used on sarees and dresses nowadays. The clothes with hand painted Madhubani paintings are very expensive. We can also get hand block painted ones in the market now. Though these hand block printed cloths do not match the elegance of hand painted cloths, if we use it properly in designing dresses and sarees, these look very nice.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here is the hand block printed cloth I bought:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDBnxHaVOQXO-EwwfKdAtwTGD-sXuiDkOO8fQLoOXxw2IpH9d7RTEiSQ7U6Jal2k2FtFOpWuBUF9xNjF0jKiigK1ruXJuvr4xBQODmxX3so4IuoEYcCl8afav2YaBXixBf3H_aA8B3woQY/s1600/Madhubani-block-print-1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Madhubani painted cloth" border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDBnxHaVOQXO-EwwfKdAtwTGD-sXuiDkOO8fQLoOXxw2IpH9d7RTEiSQ7U6Jal2k2FtFOpWuBUF9xNjF0jKiigK1ruXJuvr4xBQODmxX3so4IuoEYcCl8afav2YaBXixBf3H_aA8B3woQY/s640/Madhubani-block-print-1.JPG" title="Madhubani painted cloth" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hand-block printed Madhubani design on cloth</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hand-block printed Madhubani design on cloth</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
For Madubani hand-clock printed cloth, I have chosen hand-woven cloth in pink and off-white. The hand-block printed cloth , I want to attach as border. Here is how the combination look:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Qu9J45nS5FmEjWDv3asCrnH__Ii08dPV5lVY6_3BAWi3wI01QfHMkSDfyjFALnndAyOO8Qt4xrfOUBqCBdBdLbpLyAeNH2VTsuC-KDx9y7vWtw21Pf93AjPrcFV_iUFjngq13o6Px2N8/s1600/madhubani-dress-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Madhubani painted cloth" border="0" height="356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Qu9J45nS5FmEjWDv3asCrnH__Ii08dPV5lVY6_3BAWi3wI01QfHMkSDfyjFALnndAyOO8Qt4xrfOUBqCBdBdLbpLyAeNH2VTsuC-KDx9y7vWtw21Pf93AjPrcFV_iUFjngq13o6Px2N8/s640/madhubani-dress-3.jpg" title="Madhubani painted cloth" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The combination for the top</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
Both look good. But I have chosen to make the pink cloth as top, as the duppata is off-white with Madhubani prints. What do you suggest?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Once it is stitched, will share in coming post.</div>

Deepavali celebration is going on. Today is second day of Deepavali. Hindu's celebrate this by performing Laxmi pooja(worshipping Laxmi- the Goddess of Prosperity) The other tradition like lighting the lamps and bursting crackers are going on.<br />
<br />
Deepavali means row of Deepa ( lamps). In all the houses lamps are lit. It is wonderful and colorful to see the view. I have<span style="font-size: large;"> <a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2011/10/happy-deepavali.html" target="_blank">collection of different types of lamps</a></span>. In some places there are<span style="font-size: large;"> <a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/search/label/Deepotsava" target="_blank">exhibition of different kinds of lamps(Deepa)</a>. </span>I also prefer to gift Deepas(lamps) to my friends and loved ones. This year also continued the same tradition. I had some terracotta lamps with peacock design , which I had bought last year. Decided to paint these lamps and gift those to my friends. <br />
Here is the terracotta lamp:<br />

Deepavali, the festival of lights started. All are in festive mood. Deepavali is not only festival of lights, I consider this as festival of shopping :) and festival of gifts. This year I have planned to give all handmade gifts to all. To gift, twin babies I stitched two frocks from an old silk saree.<br />
<br />
This saree was gifted to me by their grand mother, who was very talented. I have written about her <a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2014/01/3rd-anniversary-of-my-blog-happy-to.html" target="_blank">works and talents in my previous posts</a>. The saree she gifted me is here, a beautiful blue <a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/search/label/Banaras%20Saree" target="_blank">Banaras saree </a>with silver zari border:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR6idRCtzcXSsRShUCAvaONBJnttQHX695RWAHmIE3h6vBjOIYbvig_a_egPlV0zMdqeauuXaY4uw_2VjmF4sG7C6YH6RxtFGTm_7QLWcVMeG2lwiQu0IjhJsGlHyFVnK17uwEyIpTj-gX/s1600/DSCN5872.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="How to stitch a frock" border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR6idRCtzcXSsRShUCAvaONBJnttQHX695RWAHmIE3h6vBjOIYbvig_a_egPlV0zMdqeauuXaY4uw_2VjmF4sG7C6YH6RxtFGTm_7QLWcVMeG2lwiQu0IjhJsGlHyFVnK17uwEyIpTj-gX/s640/DSCN5872.JPG" title="How to stitch a frock" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Many times, thought not to cut this saree, but this is the best gifts I can give to the kids. So decided stitching frocks for her grand children.<br />
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
How to stitch a frock:</h3>
<div>
Though I used to stitch , my dresses earlier, recently had not stitched anything. I was out of touch of stitching dresses. I had forgotten , how to cut pattern for a frock. My old books helped me and also my sister who is an expert helped me to recollect. Here are the cuttings of the frock:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIiWx9VnDPLYgxn5CCssExAe_NfBO6YKsAX8BauwyD9j7C30PQ7r4uKGbhxiSm2TrF2A0l94ZPui3kD1nKDCblkoKnQYYFvYdj8mbGjrAtvCDWHKYXs4ygnABXIzT3hraC92UQylYn4rvS/s1600/frock.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="How to stitch a frock" border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIiWx9VnDPLYgxn5CCssExAe_NfBO6YKsAX8BauwyD9j7C30PQ7r4uKGbhxiSm2TrF2A0l94ZPui3kD1nKDCblkoKnQYYFvYdj8mbGjrAtvCDWHKYXs4ygnABXIzT3hraC92UQylYn4rvS/s640/frock.jpg" title="How to stitch a frock" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Front and back of the frock</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Stitched the cuttings, and here is the top part of the frocks:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Ktz30opS28nNdRf1HQbkNFgYUQvOuz96bLQdbQk4pvyvv8bKXDsLGo6FVkaqU8j8X-Q3JKuqq3yfHjV22eKWyFvMLNqSTIAoWspjDMkGPwFmQugOfE_pWnrCQs1XkqbjHQBiJJiYQ4Lz/s1600/frock2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="How to stitch frock" border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Ktz30opS28nNdRf1HQbkNFgYUQvOuz96bLQdbQk4pvyvv8bKXDsLGo6FVkaqU8j8X-Q3JKuqq3yfHjV22eKWyFvMLNqSTIAoWspjDMkGPwFmQugOfE_pWnrCQs1XkqbjHQBiJJiYQ4Lz/s640/frock2.jpg" title="How to stitch frock" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Top part of the frock</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
While stitching a frock , the difficult part is to stitch the top part. Once this is done, attaching the frills is very easy. So I could finish the frock within few hours. Here is the finished frock:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrA29EjKPLcm-Z8rVbrQ_Qfsy2vVaCTvmzwvq7RUrx0V98p-bllkhZ5zAOHVoectfmlavII6wAGONkVv3WtstmJq9j1ca3HO_9a9K1NuXNEomll0_X40xhlZt5a5vmF8ze8IWwYc0QEPKT/s1600/frock3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="How to stitch frock" border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrA29EjKPLcm-Z8rVbrQ_Qfsy2vVaCTvmzwvq7RUrx0V98p-bllkhZ5zAOHVoectfmlavII6wAGONkVv3WtstmJq9j1ca3HO_9a9K1NuXNEomll0_X40xhlZt5a5vmF8ze8IWwYc0QEPKT/s640/frock3.jpg" title="How to stitch frock" width="478" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Frock</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The twins were looking very pretty wearing the frocks.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have the border of the saree left out. Planning to design a saree with that. Hope to share about that soon.</div>

I have many designs on papers, like embroidery designs, dress designs etc. I had kept those in a normal paper folder. Artist in me was not satisfied with the plain paper folder. To make it interesting , I thought of decorating the folder to keep all the designs. I haven't used any special technique, just went on doing whatever came in my mind. :)<br />

In my previous post I have already shared about judging the <a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2016/10/judging-gombehabba.html" target="_blank">Gombehabba competition </a>. I visited 10 houses to judge the competition. In each house , the arrangement of dolls was amazing. In some houses the themes were very attractive, and in some the creativity was dominating and in some houses I could see wonderful collection of dolls, which were bought from different parts of the world. Sharing about some of the unique dolls I saw.<br />
Let me start with the Buddha doll meditating in a garden:<br />

Gombe habba is a cute tradition which is celebrated in some parts of South India. I have already written about this tradition in my <a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/search/label/Gombe%20Habba" target="_blank">previous posts</a>. This year there was no sign , that any would invite me. I was little disappointed. But a surprise was waiting for me. A Kannada News daily <a href="http://www.vijaykarnatakaepaper.com/Details.aspx?id=15729&boxid=123239529" target="_blank">Vijaya Karnataka </a>conducts competition about gombe habba. I was invited to judge the competition. every year I used to visit one or two houses to see Gombe habba. Because of Vijaya Karnataka , I visited 10 houses to see gombe habba<br />
Here are some glimpses of the Gombe habba , we visited , published in news paper:<br />

The day we visited 10 houses. In each house the arrangements of dolls was wonderful. I could see everywhere dolls, depicting different themes. The themes included stories from mythology to current issues like Kaveri water dispute between Karnataka and TamilNadu, recent surgical attack etc. I have captured photos of dolls, which I found very interesting. I will share about those in coming post.<br />

I need not write anything about Kerala Kasavu sarees. Most of the saree loving women , own at least one Kerala Kasavu saree in their collection. This is also known as "Mundum Neriyathum". This is traditional saree of Kerala.Fine cotton handwoven sarees produced by weavers of Balarampuram near Tiruvantharam.<br />
<br />
<br />
It has two pieces, Mundum and Neriyattum, which is in white color or very light cream color.This has combination with Kasav( silk thread covered with gold or silver plated threads). In Raja Ravi Verma's paintings, the women he painted are mostly wearing Mundum Neriyattum.<br />

I was supposed to post about handmade Rakhee, before Raksha Bandhan.It got delayed because I was attending a workshop to learn a different craft.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raksha_Bandhan" target="_blank"> Raksha Bandhan </a>is festival in India to celebrate bondage between brother and sister. All the Indians know about this.Lots of Rakhis are available in market , I prefer to send handmade Rakhis, but everytime due to lack of time , end up sending Rakhis which are bought from market. Few years ago I had made <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2012/07/raksha-bandhan-bondage-between-brother.html" target="_blank">Rakhis using quilling strips</a>. <span style="font-size: small;">Those were liked by all my brothers. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">This year learnt another craft, polymer clay jewellery making. Thought of making , Rakhis using polymer clay. I'm just learning this craft, so these have not come out nicely. :(</span></span><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
I never get contended with collecting and designing with traditional paintings of India. Kalmakari is one such art. I have kalmkari patches, kalamkari borders, kalamkari duppata, kalamkari saree , kalamkari hand block printed clothes etc. Still whenever I see clothes with kalamkari art, I end up buying that. :-). I have designed 3-4 sarees using kalamkari patches. First one was with <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2012/04/kalamkari-patchwork-on-saree.html" target="_blank">Paisley designs</a></span> , and recently designed some sarees with <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2015/12/kalamkari-border-attached-saree.html" target="_blank">Kalamkari border</a> <span style="font-size: small;">for my customers</span></span>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Another saree with <span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://ranjana-craft-blog.blogspot.in/2016/05/saree-design-with-kalamkari-border.html" target="_blank">blue silk material and Kalamkari border</a></span> was designed with a zari border. If I use zari border and cloth with zari motifs, I can't wear it on casual day. So this time designed Kalamkari saree without zari, so that I can wear it anytime , any day :-).</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Here it is :</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBz6EghsDkbqK7VStJlFNU4MC5qZg4vGyehJhBI_c7wvar_mr2J5hdPdEPPuk6ws5QSLIqHTlz2cMlHwvLMnjxAoPsye3HSUmQMyO5aNn9z3Hmi-Y1hNXI5PcAeh_nBXS2mzQy1iSWsgQK/s1600/kalmakari-1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Kalamkari saree" border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBz6EghsDkbqK7VStJlFNU4MC5qZg4vGyehJhBI_c7wvar_mr2J5hdPdEPPuk6ws5QSLIqHTlz2cMlHwvLMnjxAoPsye3HSUmQMyO5aNn9z3Hmi-Y1hNXI5PcAeh_nBXS2mzQy1iSWsgQK/s320/kalmakari-1.JPG" title="Kalamkari saree" width="330" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kalamkari saree</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I chose a beautiful Kalamkari border with peacock design, in light green color. Here is the Kalamkari border:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5dWafkqCin2yeIvK1RRxCdbT_9h4ciIQr2JgS8AwX51ySiYjTiYb2IQ9rwoADIXqwTdAkbSlMeOq0i05U1d7_ErqCgMLWq13OV1j9d0tZZfqOHE17bdzy7r24-PeEbrupis0bdIte03LA/s1600/kalamkari-2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Kalamkari saree" border="0" height="352" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5dWafkqCin2yeIvK1RRxCdbT_9h4ciIQr2JgS8AwX51ySiYjTiYb2IQ9rwoADIXqwTdAkbSlMeOq0i05U1d7_ErqCgMLWq13OV1j9d0tZZfqOHE17bdzy7r24-PeEbrupis0bdIte03LA/s640/kalamkari-2.JPG" title="Kalamkari saree" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kalamkari border</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I was searching for a right cloth for this border. I could have chosen dark green or pink. But decided to avoid dark colors this time. So selected pastel color . As the border has pink color too, I chose pink color as contrast. For the pink color , I used the cloth from my mother's old silk saree.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Here are the materials I used :</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyPw4iJU879Pxk0eoCZ7XXIiYWApMRkASkMdF-wC-pNXxHxLF9NoKCG_024hLAnup5xI6JXDOBmH4_9kkjerSxnuJ_285AqIEhDvpufzDCZJaU87Qe6G4fh4hNIJcXHTMp575d4zr8vwb2/s1600/kalamkari-3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Kalamkari saree" border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyPw4iJU879Pxk0eoCZ7XXIiYWApMRkASkMdF-wC-pNXxHxLF9NoKCG_024hLAnup5xI6JXDOBmH4_9kkjerSxnuJ_285AqIEhDvpufzDCZJaU87Qe6G4fh4hNIJcXHTMp575d4zr8vwb2/s640/kalamkari-3.JPG" title="Kalamkari saree" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The materials chosen</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Attached the kalamkari patch as border along the saree, contrasting it on both the sides with small strip of pink silk cloth.</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBTpzzOjRp42FBgk5gZTGxB4cwS4Yz5NAtopsn4IaoqVouq6m-KngTmKKbfuKXtSCdg5z1jVcs6i8AITl53CRZCPPLaQTNlOOOkJHMetb0k1MIj576SNzTI4t4NQ768ETawIurchyBpOUT/s1600/kalamkari4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Kalamkari saree" border="0" height="592" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBTpzzOjRp42FBgk5gZTGxB4cwS4Yz5NAtopsn4IaoqVouq6m-KngTmKKbfuKXtSCdg5z1jVcs6i8AITl53CRZCPPLaQTNlOOOkJHMetb0k1MIj576SNzTI4t4NQ768ETawIurchyBpOUT/s640/kalamkari4.JPG" title="Kalamkari saree" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kalamkari saree</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The pink silk saree cloth is remaining . So I will use it for the blouse. Though it has some glossy silk look, but I can wear it on casual day too. Or shall I choose a blouse in cotton for this? </div>
